MOUNT OLIVE (Sept. 13) – Hosting a five-team invitational at Kornegay Arena for a consecutive year, the Trojans suffered a pair losses on the opening day of the event after falling 3-2 to Edinboro before dropping a 3-1 decision to Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday.
Against Edinboro (4-2) of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), the University of Mount Olive fell by a 3-2 margin (25-21, 26-24, 23-25, 19-25, 11-15) despite featuring four players with double-digit kills in their first match of the Mount Olive Invitational. Junior
Sam Widelski recorded a career-high 21 kills on a .273 hitting percentage while competing in all five sets. Fellow senior
Ashlyn Stone posted a kill/dig double-double after tallying 14 kills and 12 digs against the Fighting Scots. Senior
Karoline Cox finished with 13 kills on an impressive .545 clip while teammate
Breanna Reisinger totaled 13 kills and four digs. Sophomore
Lyndsay Reid guided the offense with a career-high 57 assists and led the defensive effort with 13 digs.
Freshman
Kacey Gore and Stone finished with 12 digs in the loss while junior
Caroline Sheaffer delivered 11 digs on Friday afternoon.
Against Lenoir-Rhyne (7-0) of the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), the Trojans suffered a 3-1 loss (19-25, 25-20, 23-25, 11-25) after being limited to a .147 hitting percentage and totaling 14 service errors. Freshman
Olivia Melvin led Mount Olive with a season-high 16 kills against the Bears. Stone delivered another kill/dig double-double after registering 11 kills and 15 digs while adding four service aces. Senior
Kate Carter totaled seven kills on a .462 hitting percentage while sophomore
Kaitlyn Landis contributed five kills, four digs, and two blocks. Reid directed the offense with 38 assists and added five digs on Friday night.
Sheaffer led the defense with a season-high 19 digs and sophomore
Gracie Payne finished with eight digs in four sets played.
UMO returns to the court on Saturday, Sept. 14 for a pair of matches against Concord and Shaw at Kornegay Arena with the Mount Olive Invitational continuing at noon.
