SUMTER, S.C. (April 27) – Facing the No. 1 seed in the Conference Carolinas Championship, the No. 4 seed University of Mount Olive men's tennis program upset Young Harris in the semifinals and punched its ticket to the title match following a 4-0 win on Saturday at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
With the win, the Trojans collect their third straight victory in the league tournament and improve to 17-4 overall. Mount Olive will face the No. 3 seed Belmont Abbey in the championship match with the start time set for 9 a.m. Meanwhile, the Mountain Lions, the regular season champions, drop to 12-7 this season after posting a perfect 8-0 record in conference play.
Mount Olive secured the doubles point to begin the semifinal match after claiming two of the three contests. Senior Guilherme Zotin de Oliveira and freshman Kristoffer Dalbak posted a 6-2 victory in the first position over Michael Schut and Mason Harmon. In the second doubles, freshman Lenn Hoffmann and sophomore Bram Poel delivered a dominant 6-1 win against Rodrigo Mendoza and Caleb McCurry, while senior Adam Ibrahim and sophomore Niklas Gruenefeldt dropped a 6-2 decision to James Bixby and Hemang Gaur in the third slot.
In the singles session, the Trojans clinched the 4-0 win after collecting three victories to advance to the championship. In the first position, de Oliveira registered a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Bixby while Dalbak produced a 7-5, 6-1 win against Mendoza in the second singles. In the sixth slot, Ibrahim won in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 versus Gaur.
Mount Olive will face No. 3 seed Belmont Abbey on Sunday, April 28, in the finals of the Conference Carolinas Championship, starting at 9 a.m.
