SUMTER, S.C. (April 28) – Competing in the Conference Carolinas Championship on Sunday morning, the No. 4 seeded Trojans fell by a 4-0 margin to No. 3 seed Belmont Abbey in the finals while competing at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
With the loss, the University of Mount Olive men's tennis team drops to 17-5 this season and must now await a possible at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Trojans were ranked sixth in the latest regional rankings while posting a 3-1 mark at the conference event. Meanwhile, Belmont Abbey clinches its third straight tournament title and earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament while producing a 25-18 record this year.
Sophomore Kabir Chhabria and senior Adam Ibrahim earned all-tournament honors following their performance at the three-day event.
Belmont Abbey captured the doubles point after claiming victories at the second and third positions. Freshman Lenn Hoffmann and sophomore Bram Poel dropped a 7-5 decision in the second slot to Nicholas Cary and Christian Winstead, while Ibrahim and sophomore Niklas Gruenefeldt were dealt a 6-0 loss versus Tim Stemler and Noelle Andrey Ampong in the third doubles.
In the singles portion, the Crusaders earned the 4-0 win after claiming three singles matches. In the third position, Gruenefeldt suffered a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 loss to Cary, while Poel dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Stemler in the fourth slot. Chhabria fell by a 6-3, 6-2 margin versus Andres Golindano in the fifth singles.
