Women's Basketball drops league game to NGU, 56-49

MOUNT OLIVE (Dec. 4) – After posting their second-lowest field goal percentage of the season, the Trojans suffered a 56-49 loss against North Greenville in Conference Carolinas action on Wednesday evening in Kornegay Arena.

With the loss, the University of Mount Olive women's basketball team falls to 1-6 overall behind a 0-3 mark in league play. The Trojans have lost the previous three meetings in the series, including the opening round Conference Carolinas Tournament matchup in 2024. Meanwhile, North Greenville improves to 1-7 this season with a 1-1 record in conference action.

Senior Alexis Durham scored a team-high 14 points while adding four rebounds, five assists, and one steal in 39 minutes. Sophomore Alondra Arroyo finished with nine points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals, and two blocks in 27 minutes. Junior Jada Priebe grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds while scoring nine points in 37 minutes on the court.

North Greenville established an early 4-0 lead before the Trojans rallied with five straight points to hold a one-point advantage at the 5:48 mark of the first quarter. UMO converted a pair of shots in the closing minutes of the quarter to take a 9-4 edge. In the second quarter, Mount Olive extended the lead to 16-6 at the 6:09 mark before NGU totaled nine unanswered points to cut the deficit to 16-15. The sides traded points down the stretch as the contest went into the break tied at 23-23.

With NGU holding a 32-31 advantage in the third, the Trailblazers mounted a 7-2 run in the final four minutes of the quarter to hold a 39-33 lead. The Trojans trimmed the deficit to 44-39 at the 5:38 mark of the fourth before an 11-5 run in the final minutes captured the win for North Greenville, 56-49.

UMO shot at a 31.8 clip (21-of-66) from the floor while going 4-of-16 (25.0 percent) from three-point range. Meanwhile, NGU finished the game shooting 36.1 percent (18-of-57) and converted 14-of-25 (56.0 percent) from the charity stripe. The Trojans held a 55-32 rebounding advantage with 28 points in the paint, while the Trailblazers scored 20 points off 26 forced turnovers.

Senior Amaijah Smith scored a game-high 17 points with two rebounds, six assists, and five steals in 40 minutes. Graduate student Ja'Mari Frederick contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists, four steals, and one block in 36 minutes.

The Trojans return to the Kornegay Arena on Saturday, Dec. 7, to face UNC Pembroke in Conference Carolinas action at 2 p.m.
