UMO downed in divisional play at Chowan

MURFREESBORO, N.C. (Dec. 14) – In Conference Carolinas East Division action, the Trojans scored a season-low in points after three single-digit quarters in a 68-38 loss at Chowan on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the University of Mount Olive women's basketball program drops to 1-8 overall behind a 0-5 mark in league play. In the series, the Hawks have won the last seven meetings between the sides and will meet again in early February in Mount Olive. Meanwhile, Chowan remains undefeated at 6-0 this season with a 3-0 record in conference action.

Sophomore Anna Miller scored a season-high 11 points behind a trio of three-pointers while grabbing six rebounds in 25 minutes. Junior Jada Priebe finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal in 39 minutes.

The Hawks established an early 6-0 advantage in the first quarter before Mount Olive scored six unanswered points, led by Miller with five points. Chowan reclaimed a 12-8 edge with 1:04 left in the quarter before UMO converted a free throw to trim the deficit to 12-9. In the second, the Hawks registered an 8-0 run to extend the lead to 20-9 before the Trojans made three of their next five shots to trail by a 25-16 margin. Chowan closed the quarter with nine straight points to head into the break with a 34-16 advantage.

Both teams struggled from the field early in the third quarter as Chowan made the only shot in the initial five minutes. The sides exchanged baskets in the final three minutes, as the Hawks entered the final quarter with a 46-21 lead. The Trojans managed to chip away at the deficit in the fourth with a 7-0 rally to trail 54-35 with 4:52 left. Chowan closed out the contest by converting seven-of-eight from the field to earn a 68-38 victory.

UMO shot at a 29.8 clip (14-of-47) from the floor while going 6-of-15 (40.0 percent) from three-point range. Meanwhile, Chowan finished the game shooting 40.5 percent (30-of-74) and converted 7-of-13 (53.8 percent) from the charity stripe. The Hawks held a 45-25 rebounding advantage with 56 points in the paint, while the Trojans scored 13 points off the bench.

Chowan junior Desiree Askew totaled a game-high 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting, adding 11 rebounds, five assists, one block, and four steals in 26 minutes. Sophomore Nyeisha Savage posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench.

The Trojans continue their road trip on Tuesday, Dec. 17, when they face Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas play at 2 p.m.
