UMO captures league win at King, 99-86

BRISTOL, Tenn. (Nov. 26) – After featuring five players with double-figures on Tuesday afternoon, the University of Mount Olive men's basketball program secured a 99-86 victory at King in Conference Carolinas action.

With the win, the Trojans currently hold a three-game winning streak and improve to 4-2 overall behind a 2-0 record in league play. Mount Olive has won three of the last four meetings versus King with all three victories on the road. Meanwhile, the Tornado drop to 2-6 this season with a 0-1 mark in conference action.

Junior Shane Peterson scored a team-high 18 points on six-of-eight attempts with five three-pointers. Additionally, he added three rebounds and one block in 25 minutes on the court. Peterson continues to be a sharpshooter from beyond the arc sinking 69.7 percent (23-of-33) from three-point range.

Freshman Raul Perez finished with a season-high 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting while tallying six rebounds and two assists in 19 minutes off the bench. Redshirt sophomore Lureon Walker totaled 14 points and five rebounds while freshman Chase Dawson contributed 14 points, one rebound, three assists, and one steal. Redshirt sophomore Christopher Brown registered a season-high 13 points on six-of-seven shots in 15 minutes off the bench.

King established an 11-4 lead in the initial five minutes of the first half before Mount Olive converted four-of-five from the floor to close the gap to 18-15 at the 12:09 mark. The Tornado managed to take a 25-20 edge, but the Trojans mounted a 13-4 rally, led by Brown with five points to claim a 33-29 advantage with 4:56 left. The sides exchanged baskets over the final four minutes, as UMO went into the break ahead by a 48-41 margin.

Mount Olive managed to extend the lead to double-digit points early in the second half behind a 12-4 run to hold a 60-45 lead. King battled back to trim the deficit to 73-65 with 9:27 to go before the Trojans made four of the next eight shots from the field to regain an 85-69 advantage. UMO closed out the final four-plus minutes by converting five of six shots to seal a 99-86 win.

UMO shot at a 53.1 clip (34-of-64) from the floor while going 11-of-22 (50.0 percent) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, King finished the game shooting 43.2 percent (32-of-74) and converted 16-of-30 (53.3 percent) from the charity stripe. The Tornado held a slight 44-39 rebounding advantage with 52 points in the paint, while the Trojans scored 47 points off the bench.

King featured four players with double-digit points, led by sophomore Mikhail Pocknett with a game-high 19 points while adding eight rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and two steals in 36 minutes.

Mount Olive will be idle for a week before continuing Conference Carolinas action against North Greenville on Wednesday, Dec. 4 in Kornegay Arena with tip-off set for 6 p.m.
