Trojans secure reverse sweep at Young Harris, 3-2

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. (Nov. 2) – Despite facing an 0-2 deficit, the University of Mount Olive women's volleyball program completed the reverse sweep on Saturday afternoon to defeat Young Harris by a 3-2 margin in Conference Carolinas action.

With the win, the Trojans have won 12 of their last 13 matches to improve to 17-7 this season with a 13-2 mark in conference play. Mount Olive has won its initial two meetings against Young Harris since the Mountain Lions joined the Conference Carolinas in 2023. Meanwhile, YHC falls to 5-13 overall behind a 5-9 record in league action.

Senior Ashlyn Stone recorded her 12th kill/dig double-double of the season after totaling 22 kills, 16 digs, six assists, and two service aces over five sets played. Fellow senior Breanna Reisinger produced a season-high 15 kills while senior Kate Carter reached double-figures with 10 kills, adding one ace, two blocks, and three digs. Sophomore Lyndsay Reid directed the offense with 32 assists and added 16 digs. Junior Breanna Tanton finished with an assist/dig double-double behind 18 assists and 10 digs.

Junior Caroline Sheaffer led the defensive effort with 23 digs while tallying four assists and three service aces.

In the first set, the Mountain Lions held an early 6-4 lead before scoring five straight points to stretch the advantage to 11-4. The Trojans managed to trim the deficit to 18-13 before tallying five of the next nine points to close the gap to 22-18. Young Harris claimed the opening set 25-19 behind a 3-1 run.

The Mountain Lions raced out to an 8-4 edge in the second set, but UMO countered with a 9-2 rally after Reisinger registered three kills to take a 13-10 lead. Young Harris responded by regaining the advantage at 16-15 before the contest was tied three times down the stretch. With Mount Olive ahead by a 23-22 margin, Young Harris answered with three consecutive points to escape the set, 25-23.

The Trojans established a 10-3 edge in the third set behind six kills by Stone before the sides exchanged the following 11 points. The Mountain Lions closed the gap to 20-14 late in the set, but Mount Olive avoided the sweep with five unanswered points to win by a score of 25-14.

In the fourth set, Young Harris held an early 9-5 lead before Mount Olive totaled four straight points to tie the match at 9-9. The Trojans eventually took the lead and extended their advantage to 17-14, but YHC countered with four consecutive points to reclaim an 18-17 edge. With Young Harris ahead 20-19, UMO closed out the set with a 6-1 rally to secure the victory, 25-21.

Despite an early 3-0 lead for UMO, the Mountain Lions responded with five straight points to take a 5-3 advantage. Mount Olive regained the lead at 9-6 before Young Harris trimmed the deficit behind back-to-back points, 9-8. The Trojans captured the reverse sweep after scoring six consecutive points to finish the fifth set, 15-8.

UMO returns to Kornegay Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 6, to face Francis Marion in Conference Carolinas divisional action, starting at 6 p.m.
