FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 5) – The University of Mount Olive women's tennis program featured a pair of singles champions and earned a doubles title over the weekend at the Methodist Fall Invitational.
The entire 10-player roster competed at the individual competition, which took place from Friday through Saturday. The Trojans played in the two-day event against a variety of local schools, including Averett, Barton, Guilford, Methodist, and Sweet Briar.
Sophomore
Simone Szovan and
Courtney Howell each finished with an undefeated record in singles play. As a team, Mount Olive collected 23 victories across doubles and singles action with six individuals claiming multiple wins in singles play.
In Flight 4, Szovan captured the singles title after winning three straight matches. She claimed the opening bout with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Juli Caracciolo of Sweet Briar before defeating Sunna Maass of Averett by a 6-2, 6-0 margin. In the championship match, Szovan produced a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Isabella Pita of Barton.
Howell earned the singles championship in Flight 7 with a 2-0 mark after receiving an opening-round bye. She registered a 6-2 win via injury versus Atty Bestwick of Sweet Briar before earning the crown by a 6-1, 6-3 margin over LaNiya Ward of Guilford.

Alina Esser posted 2-1 records in singles play and finished runner-up in their respective flights. Freshman
Julie Jagiella placed third in Flight 4 with a 2-1 mark after defeating Maass by a 6-2, 2-6, 10-4. Freshman
Claudia Cerdan produced a 1-1 record in Flight 3 but was forced to exit the event due to injury.
In doubles, sophomore
Lara Stamereilers and Calle competed in Flight 1 and won the first round 6-0 before earning a 6-3 victory in the semifinals. The duo was awarded the title after their fellow teammates Szovan and Guerrero (2-0) retired from the championship. Senior
Sandra Riecken and freshman
Nina Bernier posted a 6-2 win in the opening round before falling in the semifinals by a 6-4 margin. In the third-place match, the tandem delivered a 6-4 victory over Emma Hulicki and Annabelle Subirats of Methodist.
Mount Olive continues the fall schedule on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they travel to face Charleston (WV) in Wilson, N.C. in a dual match.
