The Trojans fall to Charleston, 7-0

WILSON, N.C. (Oct. 19) – Facing an NCAA Tournament team from last season, the Trojans dropped a 7-0 decision while facing Charleston in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis program drops to 0-1 in dual matches after competing in two individual tournaments during the fall. Meanwhile, Charleston improves to 3-0 this season following a pair of wins over opponents from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).

The Golden Eagles claimed the doubles point to begin the match after winning two of the three contests. In the first doubles, sophomores Lara Stamereilers and Simone Szovan delivered a 7-5 victory over Sara Martinez and Michelle Connor. Sophomore Victoria Calle and junior Alina Esser suffered a 6-3 loss in the second position to Filippa Larsson and Harriet Glaves. In the third slot, freshman Nina Bernier and senior Sandra Riecken battled in a 7-6 (7-2) loss against Viola Hirzberger and Claudia Pastor.

In singles play, Charleston captured the win following six victories to earn a 7-0 decision over Mount Olive. Stamereilers competed in the first singles and fell by a 6-1, 6-0 margin to Martinez, while Szovan suffered a 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Connor in the second slot. In the third position, Calle battled in a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Larsson before Bernier fell in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-4) versus Pastor in the fourth singles. Freshman Julie Jagiella competed in the fifth slot and dropped a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Riva Hondiashvili, while Esser suffered a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Glaves in the sixth position.

The Trojans concluded the fall portion of their schedule on Nov. 1-3 at the Seahawk Ocean Classic hosted in Wilmington, North Carolina.
