Mount Olive features three different goal scorers; Engren collects six saves in the win

MOUNT OLIVE (Sept. 29) – After building a three-goal lead in the second half, the University of Mount Olive men's soccer team claimed a 3-2 victory over Southern Wesleyan on Friday afternoon at Amon Field in Conference Carolinas action.

With the win, the Trojans improve to 2-5-1 this season behind a 2-3 record in league play. Mount Olive picks up its sixth-straight win over SWU and prepares for a divisional matchup at Barton next Wednesday, Oct. 4. Meanwhile, the Warriors fall to 2-7-1 overall with a 0-5-0 mark in conference action.

Mount Olive controlled possession on the offensive side of the field for the majority of the first half and tallied five shots, including three attempts on goal. In the 39th minute, the Trojans capitalized on a mistake by the backline as freshman Babacar Fall won the challenge and scored the opening goal, 1-0. The Warriors looked for an equalizer late in the final five-plus minutes, but junior goalkeeper Axel Engren managed to collect two saves to retain the advantage.

In the second half, the Trojans quickly increased the lead to 2-0 after sophomore Novian Williams beat the goalkeeper at the near post with an assist awarded to teammate Joao Barboza Filho at the 51:06 mark. Five minutes later, sophomore Pablo Herrera recorded a rebound goal in the 58th minute after the goalie stopped the initial shot from Williams, 3-0. Southern Wesleyan stopped its scoreless drought at the 84:10 mark after taking advantage of a defense error to cut the deficit to 3-1. Just 49 seconds later, the Warriors closed the gap to 3-2 off a header from a cross into the box after a short corner kick. SWU managed one more shot on goal with just over a minute left before Engren forced the ball over the crossbar to secure the win, 3-2.

Engren finished the contest with six saves while not conceding a goal in 87-plus minutes between the posts.

The Trojans held a 13-8 edge in shots on goal while holding a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
