SUMTER, S.C. (Sept. 24) – The University of Mount Olive men's tennis program competed at the 2023 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional Championships over the weekend at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina.
Mount Olive featured two doubles pairings at the event in the 48-team, field, while also having five individuals participate in singles with nearly 100 players in the tournament.
Sophomores
Bram Poel and
Niklas Gruenefeldt registered an 8-2 win in the opening round over Diego Lopez and Paulo Gutierrez of Mars Hill on Friday. The following day, the duo posted an 8-4 victory over eighth-seed Rodrigo Mendoza and Mason Harmon of Young Harris before suffering an 8-6 loss to Simon Malis and Baptiste Mercier of Flagler in the round of 16.
Senior
Guilherme Zotin de Oliveira and freshman
Kristoffer Dalbak earned the 16th seed and received a bye through the round of 64. In the next round, the duo suffered a 9-7 defeat to Ludvig Danielsson and Ambroise Marchand of Lander.
In singles play, sophomore
Kabir Chhabria captured a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8) victory in the opening round over Diego Lopez of Mars Hill before suffering a 6-1, 1-6, 3-6 loss to Markus Sorensen of Lander in the round of 64.
Dalbak received a bye to begin the tournament but fell by a 4-6, 6-3, 1-6 margin in the round of 64 to Enzo Bordini Garutti of Augusta. In the consolation bracket, he secured a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-3) win against Dean Kingsley of North Greenville.
Gruenefeldt also earned an opening round bye before suffering a 4-6, 4-6 loss to Vadym Rogynskyi of Lenoir-Rhyne. He responded in the consolation bracket with a 6-2, 1-6, 10-6 victory versus Carlson Lim of Francis Marion.
The two remaining single players from Mount Olive suffered losses in the first round of competition on Friday.
Mount Olive returns to the court next week for the Belmont Abbey Tournament on Sept. 28-29.
