Simone Szovan played in the finals of Flight B doubles, while freshman
Sara Gajbhiye reached the semifinals in singles play at the 2023 Conference Carolinas Roundup in South Carolina.
Aylward and Szovan started Flight B doubles with consecutive 6-3 victories, including defeating third-seeded duo Leilany Sanchez and Kylie Elliott of Belmont Abbey, on Friday to advance to the semifinals. The duo registered a 6-1 win the following day to move on to the finals. On Sunday, Aylward and Szovan fell by a 6-4 margin to Silvia Fernandez and Isabella Pita of Barton College.
In singles play, Gajbhiye made an appearance in the semifinals of Flight C in her debut with the Trojans. Following an opening-round bye, she produced back-to-back straight-set wins, including a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory over third-seeded Elliott of Belmont Abbey. Despite advancing to the semifinals, Gajbhiye was forced to withdraw due to injury.
In Flight B, freshmen
Victoria Calle and
Lara Stamereilers each reached the quarterfinals in singles play in their first appearances with the program. Calle earned the second seed and posted a pair of victories on the opening day of competition before falling to Claudia Zaratiegui of Barton in the quarterfinals by a score of 2-6, 4-6. Stamereilers defeated Eve Robinson of Emmanuel, who entered as the first seed, by a 6-2, 6-0 margin in the round of 32 before earning a win to advance to the quarterfinals of Flight B. She suffered a 2-6, 6-4, 7-10 loss to Sofia Giraldo Jimenez of Converse on Saturday.
Mount Olive is idle for two weeks before returning to tournament play at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regionals on Sept. 22-25 in Sumter, South Carolina.
