GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 28) – The University of Mount Olive was voted by its peers as the 2022-23 Conference Carolinas Sports Medicine Staff of the Year on Wednesday morning.
The UMO sports medicine staff of Assistant Athletic Trainer Alex Davisson and Athletic Trainer Randy Pridgen were committed to providing personalized, comprehensive, contemporary and effective health care on student-athletes from 24 programs this year. At the start of the 2023-24 academic year, Davisson will be named the Interim Director of Sports Medicine at Mount Olive.
"Being an athletic trainer in collegiate athletics is not easy by any stretch of the imagination," Mount Olive Assistant Director of Athletics/Compliance Coordinator/SWA Kristen Gurley said. "We are very thankful for the hard work, time and dedication that Alex and Randy have put into our student-athletes as well as the successes of Trojan athletics. This year our two certified athletic trainers were in a daunting situation being significantly understaffed, and they were tasked with the responsibility of providing care for 850 student-athletes and 24 teams. The Sports Medicine staff within an athletic department is paramount in the student-athlete's achievements and team successes. Our athletic trainers are a big part of a student-athlete's routine, helping the student-athletes avoid injuries and help them balance the demands of being both a student and athlete. We would also like to thank the Goldsboro Physical Therapy Staff for assisting our athletic trainers and our student-athletes return to the field/court/mat/track in a timely manner. This relationship has proven to be of benefit to our staff athletic trainers as well as our student-athletes."
The Sports Medicine Staff of the Year was voted on by the Athletic Trainers Committee (all member institution head athletic trainers) in Conference Carolinas.
"Despite being short-staffed during the school year, UMO is all about family and supporting one another," said Davisson. "The sports medicine program had amazing support from everyone in athletics, allowing us to help our student-athletes excel. UMO sports medicine could not be more grateful for the support and encouragement from our fellow athletic trainers across the Conference Carolinas."
