FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. (April 15) – The University of Mount Olive women's tennis program concluded the Conference Carolinas regular season with a win on the road against Emmanuel by a 4-3 margin on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, UMO improves to 11-11 overall this season behind a 7-2 mark in conference play. Following the results of today's matches, the Trojans secured the No. 3 seed in the league tournament and will receive a bye to the quarterfinals and are set to face the winner of Emmanuel/Francis Marion on Friday, April 21st, at 2 p.m., in Florence, South Carolina. Meanwhile, the Lions of Emmanuel drop to 9-10 behind a 5-4 record in league action.
Mount Olive swept the doubles point winning all three sessions. In the first position, senior
Liza Voloshyna and junior
Nele Weber overcame Darja Chistov and Sabina Roua 7-6 (7-4). Senior
Ingrid Montserrat and freshman
Oriana Izarra recorded their eighth-consecutive win after defeating Victoria Rodriguez and Shatavisa Ghosh with a score of 6-3 in second doubles. In the third slot, junior
Jessica Aylward and freshman
Laura Servien made short work of their opponents Lauren Castillon and Eve Robinson beating the duo, 6-2.
In singles, three Trojans completed their match successfully. In No. 1 singles, Montserrat battled down Alejandra Guerrero 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, while Voloshyna was downed by Soleny Gonzalez 6-2, 6-2 in second position. In third singles, Izarra registered her third-straight win in a 6-4, 6-1 win against Rodriguez, before Weber suffered a 6-3, 6-1 loss versus Robinson. Servien replied with a 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 win against Chistov in the fifth slot before Aylward fell to Roua with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
Mount Olive will compete in the Conference Carolinas Championship next weekend, starting in the quarterfinals on Friday, April 21, at 2 p.m. versus the winner of Emmanuel/Francis Marion in Florence, South Carolina.
