UMO secures win over FMU, advances to semifinals

Trojans return to semifinals for fourth-straight year; UMO posts wins at No. 3, 4, 5 singles

FLORENCE, S.C. (April 21) – Following an opening round bye, the No. 3 seeded Trojans roll past Francis Marion by a 4-1 margin in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Championship, hosted at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center in South Carolina.

With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis program improves to 12-11 overall while winning the previous five meetings against the Patriots, including four victories in Florence. The Trojans advance to the semifinals of the league tournament and will face No. 2 seed Lees-McRae for a spot in the championship match. Meanwhile, Francis Marion closed the season with a 10-11 mark and advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Emmanuel by a score of 4-3 in the first round eariler today.

In doubles action, the Trojans captured victories in the first and second positions to record the point, while the third slot went unfinished. At No. 1 doubles, senior Liza Voloshyna and junior Nele Weber posted a 6-4 victory over Chelsea Seidewitz and Julie Martincova. Senior Ingrid Montserrat and freshman Oriana Izarra defeated Gabriel Karatantcheva and Kim Venghaus by a score of 6-3, while the third doubles went unfinished with UMO leading by a 5-4 margin.

Mount Olive registered wins in three of the four completed singles matches to seal the postseason win on Friday. Voloshyna suffered a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Martincova in the second slot before freshman Laura Servien answered with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the fifth position. Weber put UMO ahead following a straight-sets win by a 7-5, 6-1 score against Sophia Hansen. Izarra clinched the game-winning match after registering a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Venghaus. Two singles matches were left unfinished after UMO secured the 4-1 win.

Mount Olive will return to the courts tomorrow, Saturday, April 22, to face No. 2 seeded Lees-McRae in the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas Championship, starting at 8 a.m.
