No. 10 Wingate tops No. 25 Mount Olive, 18-8

Match features top-25 nationally ranked teams; Davis earns hat trick in the loss

MOUNT OLIVE (April 12) – In a mid-week, top 25 nationally ranked contest, the No. 25 University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse team fell to No. 10 Wingate by an 18-8 margin on Wednesday afternoon at Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.

With the loss, the Trojans suffer their first loss in nearly a month and fall to 9-5 overall with all of their losses coming against nationally-ranked opponents. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs improve to 13-2 overall with their nine-consecutive win and remain undefeated in away contests.

Wingate scored the initial eight goals of the contest, 8-0. At the 2:37 mark of the match, graduate student Meagan Maxwell received a pass from senior Bria Hamilton and put one past the keeper, 8-1. At the start of the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored, 9-1. At the 13:34 mark, graduate student Ali Davis scored her first goal of the game, reaching the 50-goal milestone, 9-2. Soon after, graduate student Morgan Paige dodged around her defender and scored her 21st goal of the season, 9-3. Wingate then closed the first half with five unanswered goals, 14-3. 

At the start of the second half, both teams battled hard as only three goals were scored in the entire quarter. Wingate netted the first goal of the quarter, 15-3. At the 10:16 mark, Maxwell found junior Logan Hibbard and scored the fourth goal of the match for the Trojans, 15-4. Closing the third quarter, the Bulldogs scored stretching their lead by twelve, 16-4. In the last frame, WU was the first to score in the quarter, 17-4. At the 9:35 mark, Hamilton put one in the back of the cage, scoring her 38th goal of the season, 17-5. Two minutes later, graduate student Margot Coomes scored with seven minutes left in the contest, 17-6. Scoring their last goal of the match, Wingate found the net at the 3:51 mark, 18-6. With back-to-back goals from Davis, she completed her hat trick and closed the game 18-8.  

Davis finished the game with three goals and a draw control. Maxwell totaled four points, with one goal, three assists, and a ground ball. 

In 45:31 minutes of play, goalkeeper Claire Hagen saw four saves. Goalies Anna James and Jane Hobbs also saw minutes between the pipes. 

Mount Olive hops back into conference play on Saturday, April 15, against North Greenville on Senior Day at 7:00 p.m.
