No. 23 UMO falls short to No. 17 Seton Hill, 14-12

Davis scores five goals; Contest featured a pair of top-25 teams

MOUNT OLIVE (Mar. 4) – In a top-25 nationally ranked contest, No. 23 Mount Olive fell by a 14-12 margin against No. 17 Seton Hill in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ray McDonald Sr. Sports Complex.
 
With the loss, the University of Mount Olive women's lacrosse program falls to 1-3 after facing their fourth-straight ranked opponent this season. Meanwhile, No. 17 Seton Hill improves to 2-1 after featuring two USA Lacrosse Magazine preseason All-Americans. 
 
Graduate student Ali Davis scored the initial goal  of the contest at the 11:41 mark of the match, 1-0. Seton Hill then responded with three straight goals in less than a minute span, 3-1. At the 7:51 mark, senior Bria Hamilton scored her fifth goal of the season to cut into the deficit before Davis tied the match with an unassisted goal, 3-3. UMO claimed its only lead of the game after junior Logan Hibbard scored off a pass by senior Meagan Maxwell, 4-3. To close the first quarter, the Griffins scored twice to gain the lead going into the second quarter, 5-4. After a scoreless three minutes to begin the quarter, sophomore Rileigh White netted a goal to tie the game 5-5. Shortly after, SHU scored at the 11:20 mark to take the lead by one, 6-5. With a free position shot opportunity, Davis tied the match scoring her third goal of the game, 6-6. In response, Seton Hill scored two straight goals to take an 8-6 advantage. With back-to-back goals by Davis, the game was tied once again, 8-8. Closing the first half, the Griffins scored the final two goals, taking a two-goal lead into the halftime, 10-8. 
 
In the start of the second half, sophomore Lena DeFilippo scored the only Trojan goal in the third quarter, 10-9. Seton Hill closed the quarter with a pair of goals extending the lead by three, 12-9. With the intensity rising, both teams were scoreless in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter. Finally, at the 9:46 mark, Maxwell scored off a free position attempt, 12-10. With 8:23 left in the game, Seton Hill scored another goal, 13-10. Bringing the match within one, Hamilton put two goals past the keeper, 13-12. Mount Olive battled hard to level the match, but the Griffins sealed the win with goal at the 1:06 mark, 14-12.
 
Davis tied her career high of five goals while tallying three ground balls, three draw controls, and caused one turnover. Fellow teammate Hamilton totaled three goals, one assist, three ground balls, and one caused turnover. 
 
UMO returns to play on Tuesday, March 7, as it travels to Daytona Beach, Florida, to face Embry-Riddle at 2 p.m.
