UMO rolls past Coker, 6-1

Oliveira, Hammond extend five-game winning streak; Hammond clinches third-straight singles win

MOUNT OLIVE (Feb. 26) – The University of Mount Olive's men's tennis team secured another win this weekend over Coker on Sunday afternoon at John Neal Walker Tennis Center by a 6-1 margin.

With the win, UMO improves to 5-4 this season with one more match before league action begins mid-March. Meanwhile, the Cobras fall to 1-4 this season with a pair of losses to Conference Carolinas opponents.

The Trojans secured the doubles point winning the first and second sessions. At the first position, junior Guilherme Zotin de Oliveira and freshman Daniel Hammond won by a score of 6-1 over Thibaut Decaluwe and Nolan Smith, before sophomore Elios Briand and freshman Bram Poel followed suit winning 7-5 against Andy Huynh and Tom Lamers. Freshmen Oliver Winterhagen and Kabir Chhabria dropped a 7-5 decision against Bernardo Peralta and Torben Brinkmann in the third slot.

In singles play, the Trojans captured five out of six victories. At the first slot, Hammond outplayed his opponent Huynh 6-2, 6-1, before junior Adam Ibrahim was dealt a 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 loss by Lamers at second singles. Senior Israel Rodriguez Rojas rebounded with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-1) win against Decaluwe in the third position, and Poel registered a 6-3, 6-4 win over Peralta at No. 4 singles. In the fifth position, Chhabria made short work of his opponent Brinkmann winning by a score of 6-1, 6-2, before Winterhagen completed the team victory with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Smith at the sixth position.

UMO will return to action for a last non-conference match on Thursday, March 9, when they take on West Virginia Wesleyan in the John Neal Walker Tennis Center at 1 p.m.
