No. 40 Mount Olive collects win over WVWC, 6-1

Oliveira, Hammond stretch winning streak to six; Hammond improves to 2-0 at No. 1 singles

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. (Mar. 9) – The No. 40 ranked University of Mount Olive men's tennis program posted a 6-1 win over the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center.

With the win, UMO improves to 6-4 this season with a scrimmage coming up Wednesday versus Virginia Wesleyan before league action begins next week. Meanwhile, West Virginia Wesleyan drops to 2-3 with all losses against Conference Carolinas opponents.

The Trojans started strong in doubles sweeping all three sessions to earn the point. In the first position, the No. 24 ranked duo of junior Guilherme Zotin de Oliveira and freshman Daniel Hammond captured a 6-3 victory over Camillo Salvi and Kevin Lin. Juniors Adam Ibrahim and Diego Ortega Cadahia followed suit in the second slot defeating Kihiro Karasawa and Emanuel Mallya 6-4, before sophomore Elios Briand and freshman Bram Poel won against Andreas Hald Dige and Anthony McIntosh with a 6-2 margin.

Mount Olive continued to dominate in singles play registering five out of six wins. In first singles, Hammond battled down Karasawa 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), before Ibrahim dropped to Mallya with a 6-1, 6-1 count. In the third slot, senior Israel Rodriguez Rojas outplayed his opponent Salvi 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, while Poel overcame Lin in No. 4 singles with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-6). In the fifth position, freshman Kabir Chhabria tallied a 6-1, 6-3 against Jonathan Lindstrand. Ortega Cadahia completed the team victory with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win against McIntosh.

Furthermore, two exhibition matches were played: Briand captured a 6-1, 6-3 win over Ishan Godbharle while junior Khushal Mehta suffered a 6-2, 6-2 loss against Giovani Pinhati.

The Trojans return to action on Wednesday, March 15, at 2:00 p.m. against Virginia Wesleyan at John Neal Walker Tennis Center for a scrimmage before traveling to Francis Marion on Saturday to begin conference play.
