Trojans post win over Catawba, 6-1

Trojans sweep all three doubles to secure the session point for the fourth time in a row

MOUNT OLIVE (Feb. 24) – The University of Mount Olive's men's tennis team posted a win over Catawba by a score of 6-1 on Friday afternoon at John Neal Walker Tennis Center.

With the win, UMO improves their record to 4-4 this season after dropping the last two matchups. Meanwhile, Catawba falls to 0-1 after opening their season at Mount Olive.

The Trojans secured the doubles point after sweeping all three sessions. Junior Guilherme Zotin de Oliveira and freshman Daniel Hammond tallied a 6-2 win at first doubles over Marcos Castares and Taketoshi Nanao, while juniors Adam Ibrahim and Diego Ortega Cadahia captured a 6-3 win over Kane Elkin and Tyler Juergens at the second position. In third position, freshmen Oliver Winterhagen and Kabir Chhabria secured the win by a 6-1 margin defeating Paul Dekester and Sebastian Zabala despite playing in this constellation for the first time.

Mount Olive sealed the match victory by winning five out of six singles matches. In the first slot, de Oliveira registered the win over Castares in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, before Hammond made short work of Elkin 6-0, 6-3 in the second position. In the third slot, Ibrahim dropped to Juergens in three sets 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6). Freshman Bram Poel secured the win against Dekester at No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-3, before Chhabria outplayed his opponent Zabala 6-1, 6-4 at the fifth slot. Winterhagen completed the team win with a straight-set victory at the sixth position against Nanao by a 6-4, 6-3 margin.

The Trojans will return to action this Sunday afternoon, Feb. 26, when they battle Coker at John Neal Walker Tennis Center at 2 p.m.
