Women's Tennis outlasts Lenoir-Rhyne, 4-3

Trojans sweep doubles play for first time this season; UMO picks up a regional win

HICKORY, N.C. (Feb. 11) – After sweeping the doubles point, the University of Mount Olive women's tennis team edged out Lenoir-Rhyne by a 4-3 margin on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play at the YMCA of Catawba Valley.

With the win, the Trojans improve to 2-4 overall after starting the season with a competitive fall and spring slate. These two teams met for the second time in a week after matching up in the City of Florence Invitational. Meanwhile, the Bears drop to 2-2 after winning a pair of matches in South Carolina the previous week.

Mount Olive captured the double points after recording a sweep in all three positions on Saturday. At the first slot, senior Liza Voloshyna and junior Nele Weber defeated Lucy Whelan and Alicia Wahlberg by a 6-1 margin. Senior Ingrid Montserrat and freshman Oriana Izarra posted a 6-4 victory at second doubles versus Evgeniya Pugina and Natalie Lutz. Junior Jessica Aylward and freshman Laura Servien claimed a 6-3 win at the third position over Jessica Fuchs and Sandy Mitsou.

The Trojans secured the match victory after winning three singles matches against the Bears. At first singles, Montserrat suffered a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Pugina, while Voloshyna fell by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 margin in the second position to Wahlberg. In the third slot, Izarra captured a 4-1 victory after her opponent, Whelan, was forced to retire. Weber earned a 6-3, 6-3 win in fourth singles against Lutz before Servien outlasted Mitsou in the fifth slot by a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In the sixth position, Aylward dropped a 6-3, 6-4 contest to Evelin Menyhart.

Mount Olive returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 14, when it travels to face Campbell in non-conference action, starting at 2 p.m.
