Trojans extend streak with win over Shaw, 65-53

Anderson has scored 67 combined points over last two games; UMO scores 33 points off turnovers

MOUNT OLIVE (Dec. 5) – Sophomore guard Laila Anderson registered consecutive 30-point performances on Tuesday night, as the University of Mount Olive women's basketball team secured a 65-53 victory over Shaw at Kornegay Arena in non-conference action.

With the win, the Trojans collected their third straight win to improve to 3-3 this season with back-to-back victories at home. Mount Olive continues non-conference play with a pair of games in Florida before facing Elon in an exhibition game in mid-December. Meanwhile, the Lady Bears drop to 4-3 overall after entering today on a four-game winning streak.

Anderson scored a new career-high with 35 points on 12-of-27 shooting while converting 5-of-11 from three-point range. She also totaled two rebounds and five steals in 38 minutes on Tuesday. Anderson was named Conference Carolinas Offensive Player of the Week on Monday following a 32-point performances versus Lees-McRae. In five games this year, she is averaging 21.0 points per game while shooting 41.4 percent from the field.

Junior Tiandria Tucker contributed nine points on four-of-six shots with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 28 minutes. Sophomore Jada Priebe finished with six points, five rebounds, one assist, and two steals in 21 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Kayla Jackson also recorded six points behind a pair of three-pointers with two rebounds in 12 minutes.

Mount Olive hit a perfect three-of-three from the floor to build an early 7-0 advantage. The Lady Bears rallied with five unanswered points before Anderson and junior Alexis Durham made back-to-back three-pointers to take a 13-5 lead with 5:39 left. Shaw mounted an 8-3 rally to close the gap to 16-13 before the Trojans nailed a pair of threes to hold a 22-13 advantage at the end of the first. The teams exchanged points in the initial three-plus minutes of the second quarter before UMO scored seven unanswered points to extend the lead to 34-21 with 3:38 left. The Lady Bears finished the half on a 9-4 run, as the Trojans held a 38-30 advantage at the break.

In the third quarter, Mount Olive made four-of-five shots and converted six-of-six from the free-throw line to build a 52-32 advantage with 4:38 remaining. The sides traded points over the next four minutes with UMO holding a 56-36 lead. The Lady Bears opened the fourth quarter with nine consecutive points to trim the deficit to 56-45 with 6:47 left. Anderson followed up with six straight points to stretch the lead to 62-48, as the Trojans claimed a 65-53 win.

The Trojans finished the game shooting 40.0 percent (24-of-60) from the floor and converted 8-of-24 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, the Lady Bears shot at a 32.8 clip (19-of-58) from the field and made 9-of-16 (56.3 percent) from the charity stripe. Shaw claimed a 35-31 edge in rebounding with 20 points in the paint, while Mount Olive totaled 33 points off 28 forced turnovers.

Senior Alexis Radcliff finished with 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting with four rebounds in 35 minutes. Junior Mikyah Finley tallied 14 points on five-of-eight attempts with a trio of three-pointers while grabbing three rebounds in 27 minutes. Senior Inari Jones grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds while contributing four points, two assists, and three blocks in 29 minutes.

Mount Olive is idle the remainder of the week before traveling to Florida next week for a pair of contests, starting with Palm Beach Atlantic on Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 5:30 p.m.
