Juan Gonzalez-Gancedo scored the equalizing goal in the 76th minute on Saturday evening, as the University of Mount Olive men's soccer team registered a 1-1 tie at Emmanuel in Conference Carolinas action.
With the draw, the Trojans move to 2-5-3 overall with a 2-3-2 mark in league play. Mount Olive remains undefeated in their last three conference games after posting a win and a pair of ties. Meanwhile, the Lions hold a 5-3-1 record behind a 4-1-1 mark in league play after entering the match on a three-game winning streak.
Emmanuel controlled possession in the opening 10-plus minutes of the match and registered four shots, including one on goal. In the 13th minute, the Lions delivered a corner kick into the box before Rafael Calderon collected the loose ball and buried it into the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. The Trojans had limited opportunities in the first half while junior goalkeeper
Axel Engren tallied two saves in the final 15 minutes to trail by a 1-0 margin at the break.
In the second half, Engren collected a pair of saves on the opening two-plus minutes before the Trojans produced three shots. At the 75:47 mark, freshman
Manny Duran sent a cross to the far post to find Gonzalez-Gancedo, who scored the equalizer, 1-1.
Engren recorded five saves in the draw on Saturday while playing all 90 minutes.
The Lions finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots while UMO held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Trojans return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 11, when they travel to face Francis Marion in divisional play, starting at 7 p.m.
