UMO secures sweep over Chowan on Halloween, 3-0

Trojans claim eighth-straight home victory; Stone, Cox, Landis combined for 35 kills

MOUNT OLIVE (Oct. 31) – The Trojans featured three players with double-digit kills while hitting at a .348 clip to earn a 3-0 sweep over Chowan on Halloween Night in Conference Carolinas action at Kornegay Arena.

With the win, the University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team improves to 19-9 this season with a 13-2 mark in league play. UMO collects its third straight win and holds a 10-2 record at home this year. Meanwhile, Chowan drops to 5-20 overall behind a 4-11 mark in conference action.

Junior Ashlyn Stone contributed 13 kills on a .481 hitting percentage with four digs and two blocks on Tuesday night. Fellow junior Karoline Cox finished with 12 kills on a .455 clip with two services aces and two blocks, while freshman Kaitlyn Landis delivered 10 kills against the Hawks. Senior Jenna Myer directed the offense with 23 assists, two aces, and three digs. Freshman Lyndsay Reid produced 18 assists, nine digs, and four service aces.

Senior libero Morgan Prots led the defense with 17 digs and three assists, while senior Neza Pec registered three kills, three aces, and nine digs. Sophomore Caroline Sheaffer contributed eight digs, while teammate Kate Carter controlled the net with three blocks.

The Hawks held an early 7-3 advantage to begin the first set before UMO rallied off four straight points, including a pair of kills from Carter to tie the contest, 7-7. Chowan responded with six unanswered points to reclaim the lead 13-7 before the Trojans scored four of the following five points, 14-11. The Hawks managed to stretch the advantage to 17-11 before Mount Olive mounted an 11-3 run to take the lead, 22-20. The match would end up tied three more times before a pair of errors by the Hawks led to the UMO winning the set, 28-26.

The Trojans registered 16 kills on a .500 hitting percentage in the second set to build a 2-0 advantage. Mount Olive scored the initial 10 points of the set, including four kills by Cox. UMO managed to extend the lead to 19-6 later before Chowan went on a short 6-2 rally to cut the deficit to 21-12. The Trojans closed out the second with four consecutive points to win by a 25-12 margin.

In the third set, Mount Olive raced ahead by a score of 7-2 before the teams exchanged the next five points. UMO mounted a 6-1 run with back-to-back kills from Cox to stretch the advantage to 15-6. The Hawks worked the deficit down to 21-14, but the Trojans scored four of the final five points to seal the sweep, 25-15.

Mount Olive returns to the court on Saturday, Nov. 4, when it hosts Francis Marion in divisional play at Kornegay Arena, starting at 7 p.m.
