Trojans earn shutout win at Chowan, 2-0

UMO collects first win in Murfreesboro since 2018; Engren records five saves in shutout victory

MURFREESBORO, N.C. (Oct. 25) – Senior Amin Ferreira and sophomore Juan Gonzalez-Gancedo each scored a goal on Wednesday afternoon, as the University of Mount Olive men's soccer team registered a 2-0 victory at Chowan in Conference Carolinas action.

With the win, the Trojans improve to 3-7-4 overall behind a 3-5-3 record in conference play. Mount Olive snaps a three-game slide in the series while recording its first win in Murfreesboro since 2018. Meanwhile, the Hawks drop to 6-4-4 this season behind a 6-2-2 mark in league action.

Junior goalkeeper Axel Engren was forced into action in the opening minutes of the contest after recording a pair of saves. The Hawks continued to pressure the offensive end with two corner kicks and a shot over the top of the net in the initial 20 minutes of the contest. The Trojans earned a corner kick and Ferreira belted the loose ball into the net to take a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute. At the 28:25 mark, Chowan was awarded a penalty kick following a handball in the box, but Engren responded with a massive save to retain the lead. Mount Olive went into halftime with a one-goal advantage while the Hawks held a 6-4 edge in shots.

In the second half, both teams registered two shots in the initial 10 minutes, including a shot on goal by senior Kevin Avila in the 57th minute. At the 58:43 mark, junior Guilherme Semola delivered a header to freshman Manny Duran before finding Gonzalez-Gancedo, who buried it into the far post to stretch the lead to 2-0. The Hawks tallied three shots in the final 15-plus minutes, but the UMO defense held strong to secure the shutout win.

Engren recorded five saves on 11 shots faced to earn a consecutive shutout victory.

Mount Olive out-shot Chowan by a 12-11 margin while the Hawks finished with an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

UMO closes the regular season on Monday, Oct. 30, when it travels to face Shaw in non-conference play with kickoff set for 8 p.m.
