TIGERVILLE, S.C. (Oct. 14) – Juniors
Ashlyn Stone and
Karoline Cox combine for 22 kills on Saturday afternoon, as the University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team completed a 3-0 sweep at North Greenville in Conference Carolinas play.
With the win, the Trojans improve to 14-7 overall behind an 8-2 record in conference play. Entering the match, both sides ranked among the top three in the league KPI standings, which will determine seeding in the conference tournament. Meanwhile, the Crusaders drop to 18-5 this season with a 10-2 mark in league action.
Stone led all players with 12 kills on a .267 clip with seven digs and one block. Cox finished with 10 kills on a .563 hitting percentage with three digs and two blocks on Saturday. Sophomore
Kate Carter produced nine kills on a .421 clip while adding four blocks. Junior
Callie Mullins totaled eight kills and four digs in the match. Senior
Jenna Myer directed the offense with 22 assists and six digs, while freshman
Lyndsay Reid registered 21 assists and nine digs.
The opening set featured a staggering 16 ties and five lead changes, as NGU built an early 9-8 lead. The Trojans answered with consecutive points before North Greenville mounted a 4-1 run to stretch the lead to 13-11. UMO countered with three straight points to take a 14-13 edge, but the Crusaders rallied off five unanswered points to take an 18-14 advantage. Mount Olive closed the gap to 18-17 before eventually tying the contest four more times. UMO battled off set point twice before scoring three consecutive points to win the set, 27-25.
In the second set, the Trojans built an 11-7 lead following a pair of kills by Mullins. The two sides exchanged the next 10 points before NGU scored four of the next six points to close the gap to 18-17. UMO maintained the advantage and tallied back-to-back kills from Cox to stretch the lead to 23-20. The teams traded points down the stretch before another kill from Cox sealed the set, 25-22.
The Crusaders established an early 8-6 advantage in the third set before Mount Olive rallied with a 7-3 run to take a 13-11 lead. North Greenville tied the contest at 13-13, but the Trojan offense delivered five kills to hold an 18-15 lead. With the UMO ahead 19-17, the Trojans scored five consecutive points to take a commanding 24-17 lead. NGU responded with three unanswered points before a kill from freshman
Kaitlyn Landis secured the sweep, 25-20.
The Trojans return to divisional play in the Conference Carolinas on Wednesday, Oct. 18, when they travel to face Francis Marion at 6 p.m.
