FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 8) – The University of Mount Olive women's tennis program featured a pair of singles champions and multiple final appearances over the weekend at the Methodist Fall Invitational.
The entire 11-player roster competed at the individual competition, which took place from Friday through Sunday. The Trojans played in the three-day event against a variety of local schools, including Averett, Barton, Guilford, and Methodist.
Freshmen
Lara Stamereilers and
Victoria Calle each finished play at the invitational with a 5-1 record after posting a 3-0 mark in singles play. As a team, Mount Olive collected 28 victories across doubles and singles action with seven players claiming multiple wins in singles play.
In the main flight, Stamereilers captured the singles title after winning three straight matches. She earned an opening round win by a 6-4, 6-2 margin over Jennika Jaison of Averett before registering a 6-1, 6-0 victory versus Silvia Fernandez of Barton. In the championship match, Stamereilers claimed a 7-5, 7-5 win over Tilde Howeler of Barton.
Calle earned the singles title while competing in the pink flight and produced a first round win against Amelie Schroeder of Averett by a 6-1, 6-3 decision. She followed up with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 win over Irma Granstam of Barton in the semifinals before winning the championship match 6-4, 3-6, 11-8 versus Leanie Hellum of Barton.
Senior
Jessica Aylward and sophomore
Lea Edelstein posted 2-1 records in singles play and finished as finalist in their respective flights. Freshman
Valeria Guerrero (2-1) placed third in the main singles draw while fellow freshman
Simone Szovan (2-1) also finished third in the blue flight. Freshman
Megan Maragliano claimed the consolation orange flight singles title after registering consecutive wins following a first round loss.
In doubles, Stamereilers and Szovan competed in the main doubles draw and posted a 6-2 win in the first round before claiming a 6-1 victory in the semifinals. In the championship match, the duo fell by a 6-3 margin to Howeler and Granstam of Barton. Additionally, Guerrero and freshman
Sara Gajbhiye suffered a loss in the first round by a 6-2 decision before winning two straight contests in the consolation bracket, including a finals win over Asher and Ryhsen of Averett, 6-1.
The tandem of Calle and Aylward placed third in the green flight behind a 2-1 record.
The Trojans finish the fall portion of their schedule on Friday, Oct. 20, when they travel to face Charleston (WV) in Wilson, N.C., at noon.
