The Trojans roll past Shaw, 5-0

Semola collects team-leading third assist; Engren, Schmitt combined for shutout win

MOUNT OLIVE (Sept. 14) – The University of Mount Olive men's soccer team featured five different goal scorers on Wednesday night in a 5-0 victory over Shaw in non-conference play at Amon Field.

With the win, the Trojans improve to 4-3 overall behind a perfect 3-0 record at home this season. Meanwhile, the Bears fall to 2-4 this year and have now lost three-straight matches after defeating a pair of opponents from the Conference Carolinas.

Mount Olive established an early 1-0 advantage in the first half after sophomore Guilherme Semola scored, his second goal of the season, after connecting on a pass from freshman Joao Barboza Filho in the 18th minute. After a long through ball in the center of the field, senior Ethan Willie beat the goalie one-to-one to put UMO up by a 2-0 lead at the 34:25-mark. Both sides would be held without a shot over the final 10-plus minutes, as the Trojans took the two-goal lead into the break.

The Bears tallied a couple of attempts and three corner kicks in the initial 15 minutes of the second half but were unable to score. In the 64th minute, Mount Olive stretch the lead to 3-0 on a goal by sophomore Rafael Obraczka off a pass from Semola, his team-leading third assist this year. On a free-kick, senior Pedro Franca delivered a cross to the far post, and teammate Will Doyen headed it into the back of the net at the 76:21-mark to increase the lead, 4-0. The Trojans would score their final goal in the closing minutes after junior Walter Gomez scored in the 83rd minute from an assist by sophomore Christen Lugo-Elibox, 5-0.

Sophomore goalkeeper Axel Engren earned the victory after playing 71-plus minutes between the posts. Teammate Ryan Schmitt made his season debut and helped complete the combined shutout.

UMO out-shot Shaw by an 11-4 margin, including a 6-0 lead in shots on goal, while Shaw posted a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

Mount Olive returns to play on Saturday, Sept. 17, for a conference match against Erskine at Amon Field with kickoff set for 1:30 p.m.
