NEWBERRY, S.C. (Aug. 28) – The Trojans featured three different goal scorers on Sunday afternoon in a 3-2 victory over Newberry in non-conference action.
With the win, the University of Mount Olive men's soccer team improves to 2-0 overall while playing on the road for the first time this year. Meanwhile, the Wolves drop to 0-2 this season after placing ninth in the preseason South Atlantic Conference (SAC) poll.
In the first half, Mount Olive produced the initial chance of the contest after sophomore
Guilherme Semola hit the left post in the sixth minute. Newberry countered and opened the scoring after junior Uriel Zarracan found the back of the net at the 8:08-mark, 1-0. Just under 10 minutes later, the Trojans tied the contest on a goal from senior midfielder
Roberto Hernandez, his first of the season, off a pass from teammate
Ethan Willie, 1-1. The Wolves nearly reclaimed the lead in the 21st minute after a shot hit the woodwork. At the 42:20-mark, junior forward
Gabe Highfield put the Trojans ahead 2-1 registering his first goal of the year with an assist recorded by senior
Pedro Franca.
Newberry pressured the net early in the second half with four shots in just under a six-minute stretch. The Wolves would tie the match in the 62nd minute on a goal from sophomore Henok Awoke, 2-2. UMO quickly recaptured the lead at the 63:05-mark after senior defender
Will Doyen scored his first goal of the year off a pass from Semola, 3-2. The Trojan defense would hold the Wolves to zero shots over the final 25-plus minutes to secure the win.
Sophomore
Axel Engren registered the win and finished with four saves on nine shots faced while playing all 90 minutes on Sunday.
The Trojans held an 11-9 shot advantage and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Trojans return to action on Thursday, Sept. 1, when they travel to face the University of North Georgia in non-conference play with kickoff set for 5 p.m.
