WILSON, N.C. – The University of Mount Olive in a redemption match against top-seeded North Greenville fell 7-6 in 10 innings in the championship game of the 2022 Conference Carolinas Baseball Championship at Historic Fleming Stadium Sunday night.
Mount Olive collected the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning when
Alden Cottle's sacrifice fly scored
Jack Casbarro.
The Crusaders evened up things with a run of their own in the top of the fourth inning.
Mount Olive, however, took the lead at 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning when
Cooper George singled in
Gordon Pihl, who had started the inning by being walked. The Trojans then extended their advantage to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh with three runs.
North Greenville cut the lead to just two runs in the top of the eighth inning.
The Trojans extended their lead back to three at 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning when
Dylan Jeffries scored off a Casbarro groundout.
The Crusaders continued to fight back and tied things up at 6-6 in the top of the ninth with three runs.
In extras, North Greenville would capture the championship-winning run in the top of the 10
th when Zarra scored on a Jordan Holladay single to right-center field.
Cottle led the Trojans' offense with two RBI.
Caleb Bishop was pinned with the loss for Mount Olive in relief as he gave up the game-winning run.
Following the championship the All-Tournament team was announced and UMO garnered three spots.
