TIGERVILLE, S.C. – For the second consecutive season and the third time in program history, Mount Olive is the Conference Carolinas Women's Lacrosse Tournament Champion after defeating second-seeded Belmont Abbey 16-7 in the title game on Saturday, April 30 at Pepsi Stadium on the campus of North Greenville in Tigerville, South Carolina.
It was all Trojans early as the Mount Olive, North Carolina program scored three of the first four goals and six-of-seven to take a commanding 6-1 lead with 11:14 to play in the first half. Belmont Abbey scored three of the next four to cut into the lead, but Mount Olive made it 8-4 at the half with a goal 24 seconds before the buzzer.
The teams traded goals to begin the second half before
Bria Hamilton tallied her second goal with 37 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 12-6 and spark a 4-0 run for Mount Olive to put the game out of reach, 15-6, with 10:38 to play. Each team added a goal in the final 1:20 for the final margin.
The Trojans tallied 36 shots with 25 on goal to Belmont Abbey's 25 shots with 19 on target. The Crusaders had a 13-5 advantage in free position attempts, but Mount Olive's defense limited Belmont Abbey to a 4-for-13 mark in the contest while
Claire Hagen made 12 saves in goal for the Trojans.
Meaghan Michaud led all scorers with five goals for the Trojans while
Shaelyn Yermal added three and
Ali Davis and Hamilton each had a pair. Davis also match the Crusaders' Kate Roberts with a game-high four draw controls. Mackenzie Kaderabek paced The Abbey offense with three points on two goals and an assist while five others scored for the Crusaders.
