Trojan Baseball Walk-Off Against Queens In Midweek Thriller

Mount Olive, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive baseball team defeated Queens University 10-9 in extra innings Tuesday at Scarborough Field. UMO moves to 18-8 while Queens moves to 15-13.

GAME INFORMATION
The midweek matchup began with a speedbump for UMO as the first batter reached on a hit by pitch and one pitch later advanced to second on a wild pitch. That run did come home to score the first run and Queens took an early lead.

UMO was able to regain the momentum scoring two Trojans in the bottom of the first.

The fifth inning allowed Mount Olive to put some separation between themselves and the Royals as Gordon Pihl, Josh Jones, and Cooper George all collected RBI base hits to extend the UMO lead to 6-1.

Queens however had a bit of fight still in them as the Royals stormed back in the sixth. The Royals as a team hit for the cycle including a grand slam to regain the lead 8-6 and the momentum swing switched back to QU. 

Queens added another run in the seventh and led by three.

Mount Olive finally came back alive in the eighth as Alden Cottle and Aaron Hedgepeth, registered RBI base hits to decrease the deficit to one, 9-8. UMO tied the game in the ninth and the game went into extra innings.

The Royals were able to get the go ahead run on in the 10th but UMO did not allow the run to score and set up the walk-off in the bottom half.

Cottle drew a lead-off walk and Hedgepeth advanced him to second on a groudout to first. Gordon Pihl came up with the clutch hit placing a ball down the left field line and Cottle motored home to walk-off the Trojans and give them the 10-9 victory.

TROJAN LEADERS
Pihl led UMO with the game winning hit and RBI to go along with his two hit three RBI day. Joe Koehler (3-1) earned the win in relief pitching two thirds of an inning of scoreless baseball.

ON DECK
The Trojans hit the road for a three-game series against No. 20 North Greenville University in Tigerville, S.C. starting Friday March 25.
