MOUNT OLIVE, North Carolina - The University of Mount Olive men's and women's tennis teams competed in the Florence Invitational Saturday and Sunday in non-conference action in Florence, S.C. Both Trojan teams went 2-1 on the weekend.
MATCH INFORMATION MEN
The Trojans started off facing Lenoir-Rhyne University losing the doubles point 2-0 leaving the third doubles match unfinished. In singles play they fell 3-1, dropping the match with an overall score of 4-1. Next on Saturday they faced Francis Marion University, earning the doubles point by winning #2 and #3 doubles. In singles the Trojans won #4, #5 and #6 singles to earn the 4-3 win. With tournament play continuing on Sunday morning, Mount Olive met Newberry College and quickly got the doubles point winning lines #1 and #3. The Trojans used that momentum and continued the singles play by winning #1, #5 and #6.

Israel Rojas, Gregory Normand and Diego Ortega played a key role at the Florence Invitational winning two singles matches each. Diego Ortega got the deciding win in the match against Francis Marion University clinching over the Patriots.

The Women's team started off facing Lander University losing the doubles point 2-1 with two matches getting decided in a tiebreaker. In singles play they fell 3-1, dropping the match with an overall score of 4-1. Next on Saturday they faced Bluefield State College, earning the doubles point by winning #2 and #3 doubles. In singles the Trojans won #3, #5 and #6 to get the 4-1 win. The next day, Mount Olive met Francis Marion University and got the doubles point winning lines #1 and #2. In singles play the Trojans won lines #1, #2 and #4 keeping the winning streak with an overall win of 4-3 over the Patriots.

Ingrid Montserrat, Nele Weber and Deike Schipper helped the Women's team with each earning two singles wins. Ingrid Montserrat played a key role in the match-up against Francis Marion University clinching over the Patriots.
COACH'S COMMENTS
"Overall from this weekend, I saw a lot of positive things and good signs from both the men and women. There were a lot of showings of resiliency and grit from many players throughout the weekend that helped us pull out some good wins. I am very excited for the matches to come," said Head Coach Carlos Lora.
