MOUNT OLIVE, North Carolina - The No.6 University of Mount Olive men's lacrosse team defeated Barton College 10-11 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon in Mount Olive, N.C.
INSIDE THE SCORE
Mount Olive won the opening face-off with UMO's Lucas Shein scoring the first goal of the game at the 12:00 mark. Senior Tim Collins found Blake Tallon, who found the back of the net putting the Trojans in the lead 2-0 with 5:38 remaining in the quarter. The Bulldogs were finally able to find an opening as Zach Hodge put one up on the scoreboard at the 1:48 mark. With :17 to go Mount Olive's Elijah Cobb found an opening to end the quarter with UMO in the lead 3-1.
In the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored within the first four minutes by B.J. Wilson, but still trailed behind 3-2. The Trojans went on a 2-1 run leaving the score at 5-3 at the break.
In the third quarter, Mount Olive put two more up on the scoreboard with scores by Zachary Taylor and Connor Watson to give the Trojans a four goal lead at the 5:14 mark. Barton came back with a little bit of fire as they went on a 2-0 run to close the gap by two, but Trojans still remained in the lead 7-5 going into the final quarter.
In the final quarter, the Bulldogs found their momentum as they scored three unanswered goals by Seth Mandryk, B.J. Wilson and Bodin Nichols putting them in the lead 8-7 for the first time throughout the game with 10:00 remaining left. Mount Olive's Tim Collins was able to find Samual Skousen as he put one in the back of the net to tie the game 8-8 at the 6:46 mark. The Bulldogs played aggressive defense as Mount Olive had three attempts to score, but with a ground ball pick up by Collins he was able to find Watson to put another one up on the scoreboard to put the Trojans in the lead 9-8 with only 2:31 remaining. Barton wasn't ready to give up just yet as Seth Mandryk put the ball in the back of the net to tie the game 9-9 at the :53 mark. The Trojans defense continued to play hard as Barton had two more chances to score, but time ran out leaving the score tied 9-9 to force overtime.
OVERTIME
Mount Olive won the face-off as Brendan Hackl one the face-off for for the Trojans. Connor Watson was able to beat the Barton defense and notch the golden goal at the 2:36 mark and help the Trojans take home the 10-9 Victory.
