BELMONT, N.C. - The No. 5 University of Mount Olive baseball completed the series sweep of the Crusaders with a doubleheader sweep of Belmont Abbey College in Conference Carolinas action in Belmont, N.C. Friday night. UMO improves to 32-8 overall, 27-5 conference, while Belmont Abbey goes to 20-18, 18-13.
GAME ONE INFORMATION
Mount Olive was unable to get anything offensively in the first, but ultimately struck first in the second scoring three runs. All three runs came home not via a base hit, but UMO took the game's first lead nonetheless.
Jack Casbarro homered in the fourth to extend the Mount Olive lead to 5-0. Belmont Abbey had an eventful fourth scoring three runs to draw the deficit to two.
After BAC drew to within one in the fifth, Mount Olive plated single runs in the sixth and seventh to secure the game one victory 7-4.
TROJAN LEADERS
Jack Casbarro led the Trojans with three RBI. Joe Koehler (3-2) earned the win allowing one run off one hit and struck out four over the final four innings of the contest.
BELMONT ABBEY LEADERS
Gobbel collected an RBI and two base hits to lead the way for the Crusaders.
KEY MOMENT
Jack Casbarro's two-run home run in the fourth proved to be the turning point as it gave Mount Olive a five-run cushion and the momentum to take game one.
GAME TWO INFORMATION
Mount Olive broke out the bats early in the series-finale as they three runs in the second and two in the third to once again take a 5-0 lead. Blake McLean clean the bases in the second and Casbarro and Dusty Baker both recorded RBI base hits as the Trojans put game two out of reach fast.
BAC answered in the bottom half of the third with two home runs and drew the score line down to 5-3. Stephen Baughan had an response however in the sixth with a three-run shot of his own and Mount Olive led 8-3.
Belmont Abbey was only able to scratch across single runs in the sixth and ninth as the hill was too tall to climb and UMO took game four 8-5 sweeping the four-game series 4-0.
TROJAN LEADERS
Blake McLean and Stephen Baughan both had three RBI days to lead UMO. Austin Elliott (1-0) picked up the win in relief as went one complete allowing one unearned run in a hit less inning. Glake Gipson (S:1) recorded the save going the final three and two thirds allowing one unearned run off three hits and struck out five.
BELMONT ABBEY LEADERS
Mason Dodd collected two RBI and three hits to lead the way for the Crusaders.
KEY MOMENT
The key moment in the second game came in the third when singles by Casbarro and Baker extended the Trojan lead to 5-2 a lead they would maintain for the remainder of the contest.
ON DECK
Mount Olive will now open play in the 2021 Conference Carolinas Baseball Championships April 28-May 2. UMO, with the No. 1 seed, will await their opponent on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Wilson, N.C the neutral site host for the Championships, the Wilson Tobs Baseball Club.
