DUNCAN, S.C. - The Trojans began their postseason Thursday afternoon, squaring off against Southern Wesleyan in the double elimination Conference Carolinas championship. Mount Olive won by an impressive fourteen runs, 15-1.
GAME INFORMATION
Southern Wesleyan got to starting pitcher,
Mallory Ratcliff, early. After getting a runner on base to begin the game, then advancing to third on errors, the runner scored on a sacrifice bunt, putting the Warriors up 1-0. The Warriors lead only lasted for half an inning as the Trojans offense was ready to go in the bottom of the first inning.
Courtlynn Cooney got the first hit for the Trojans, singling down the right field line, then stealing second base. The next batter was
Cassandra Lassiter, who earned a walk, followed by
Kylie Emanuele reaching on an error to load the bases for
Madison Morgan. Morgan delivered, sending one back up the middle, scoring two, giving the Trojans a 2-1 lead.Â
In the bottom of the second the Trojans added six insurance runs. Lassiter doubled to left field, scoring two and putting the Trojans up 4-1. Lassiter's at-bat was followed by a sacrifice fly to right field from Emauele, scoring another run. Morgan then singled home Cooney, giving the Trojans a 6-1 lead. The last two runs of the inning came from fielding errors, giving the Trojans a 8-1 lead through two innings.Â
The Trojans continued to pour it on in the bottom of the third inning. Similar to the first inning, Cooney got the inning started with a single, then stole second, and advanced to third on a fielding error. Her at-bat was followed by Lassiter putting a ball into play, forcing an error by the third baseman, and scoring Cooney. Emanuele then doubled to left field, scoring Lassiter, and extending the Trojans lead to 10-1. Later in the inning with two runners on base,
Hannah Burress homered to center field, putting the Trojans up 14-1. The Trojans added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, making the score, and final, 15-1. The Trojans sealed to victory in large part due to their offense, but didn't feel any pressure at the plate due to Ratcliff and
Hailey Kessinger being in a groove in the circle. Ratcliff went three innings, allowing two hits while striking out three. Kessinger, in two innings work, didn't allow a hit and struck out one.Â
KEY MOMENT
In the bottom of the second inning the Trojans exploded for six runs, giving them a 8-1 lead early in the game. This cushion allowed the offense to be relaxed at the plate, going on to add seven more runs, taking the final, 15-1.
TROJAN LEADERS
Madison Morgan had three RBI on two hits.
WARRIOR LEADERS
Megan New had the lone RBI.
