MOUNT OLIVE, North Carolina- The University of Mount Olive men's volleyball team defeated the Flying Fleet of Erskine College 3-1 on senior day Friday evening inside Kornegay Arena. The Trojans improve to 11-3, 10-2 and Erskine falls to 9-12, 4-7. The win secured UMO the Conference Carolinas Regular Season Championship for the first time since 2013.
GAME INFORMATION
Mount Olive held a slim lead in the early going of the opening set lead 13-9. A three-point swing in favor of Erskine drew the UMO lead down to 16-15, but that was as close as the Flying Fleet managed as the Trojans took the final two points of the set and won 25-20.
The second set once again saw UMO jump out to a four-point advantage 10-6 in the early onset. The lead however did vanish as Erskine tied the set at 17. The second frame went onto be knotted three more time before Mount Olive ended the set on a 5-to-2 run to win the set 25-22.
The third set had Erskine take the lead for the first time at 5-3. The lead for the Flying Fleet did not hold as the set became tied at seven and then went onto be tied twice more. Following Eric Visgitis tying the set at 15 EC broke the game open scoring five unanswered points to take control of the set and ultimately win 25-21.
The final set had the two teams square for the first 16 points until UMO won four points in a row to gain the lead and once they obtained the margin they did not relinquish it. Several mulit-point runs in the set allowed Mount Olive to build a comfortable lead in which they took to a final tally of 25-14 winning the match 3-1.
Mount Olive Leaders
The Trojans were led by Tobi Azeez with 22 kills and five service aces. He also had 15 digs defensively. Jarrod Ferguson added 45 assists.
Erskine Leaders
The Flying Fleet were led by Edgerrin Austin with 22 kills.
COACHES COMMENTS
"It's an awesome feeling to be the regular season champions. The boys and I have worked so hard the last few years to accomplish this! We are looking to better and more consistent heading into the conference tournament because we know everyone is going to be gunning for that tournament championship," said Head Coach Ali'i Keohohou.
