No. 4 Trojan Baseball Takes Weekend Series Against Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. - The No. 4 University of Mount Olive baseball won a four-game series with Erskine College three games to one in Conference Carolinas action in Due West, S.C. Mount Olive fell in the series-opener, but came back to take the final three games for the series win. UMO improves to 28-8 overall, 23-5 conference, while Erskine goes to 19-15, 16-10.

GAME ONE INFORMATION
Mount Olive was unable to get anything offensively swinging as they were held to just four hits over seven innings, while Erskine unloaded for nine runs.

The Flying Fleet struck first in the third with a solo home run and an RBI-single to take  2-0 lead. The EC lead became 9-0 by the end of the fifth and Mount Olive was never able to put a run across the board as Erksine took game one.

ERSKINE LEADERS
Bacon collected three RBI to lead the way for the Flying Fleet.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment came in the third when Erskine took the lead and never relinquished it.

GAME TWO INFORMATION
The second game was a complete turnaround for the Trojans as they put on a scoring showcase. The scoring started slow as Blake McLean scored Aaron Hedgepeth on a sacrifice fly for the first run and lead of the game for UMO, however it was the first of many.

Mount Olive added four more runs in the first and Erskine scored their lone run of the game in the bottom half. The Trojans went onto add 15 more runs highlighted by two Gunner Tolston multi-RBI home runs and cruised to victory to even the series at one all after Friday's contests.

TROJAN LEADERS
Gunner Tolston led the team's offense with six RBI. Hunter Stevens (8-0) picked up the win as he went five complete allowing Erskine's lone run off four hits and struck out four.

ERSKINE LEADERS
Foster collected one RBI and one hit to lead the way for the Flying Fleet.

KEY MOMENT
The key moment in the second game came in the third when the Trojans were able to gain the lead for the first time and ignite what proved to be a potent attack in the second contest of the series.

GAME THREE INFORMATION
The third game of the series was the closest of the three as UMO jumped out to a 1-0 advantage in the first off a Vito Patierno sacrifice fly. Mount Olive added another run in the third, however, Erskine answered with a run of their own and took the Trojan lead to 2-1 after three.

Mount Olive continued to apply the offensive pressure, but it was not until the fifth that they saw any results as two more runs crossed for the visitors. Down 4-1, the Flying Fleet once again did not go down without a fight scoring a run on a wild pitch bringing the deficit to two.

The deciding blow came in the sixth when UMO's third baseman Zack Smith scored McLean and Case Kermode to put the Trojans up 6-2. Even though Erskine plated two runs in the bottom half they were unable to add anything in the seventh and Mount Olive took game three 6-4

TROJAN LEADERS
Zack Smith led the team's offense with two RBI going 3-for-4 at the plate. Kyle Davis (4-0) was credited with the win in relief as he went two and two thirds allowing three runs off five hits and struck out two. Justin Koehler (S:1) picked up his first save of the season finishing the game in the seventh allowing one hit and striking out a pair.

ERSKINE LEADERS
Boyd collected two RBI to lead the way for the Flying Fleet in game three.

KEY MOMENT
Even though UMO took the lead from the start the true momentum killer came in the sixth when Smith's two-RBI single put the game out of reach.

GAME FOUR INFORMATION
The series finale was by no means a pitcher's duel as Mount Olive opened up the first scoring seven runs. The Trojans did not stop there as 11 more runs came home in the next two innings alone as UMO led 18-0. In all of the production, Jack Casbarro did drive in his first grand slam of his career, fifth homerun of the season, in the first inning.

Erskine sniffed at spark of offense scoring four unanswered over the next two innings, however, Mount Olive countered with a four-spot in the sixth and led 22-4.

The final shot from the Flying Fleet came in the seventh when they scored two runs, but that was all they had left in the tank as they fell in the finale 22-6 and the series 3-1.
