No.7 UMO Women's Basketball Upsets No3 seed Emmanuel College 63-59

SPRINGS, GA - The No.7 seeded women's basketball team upset the No.3 seeded Emmanuel College 63-59 in the 2021 Conference Carolinas Championship Quarterfinals Tuesday Night in Springs, GA. 

INSIDE THE SCORE
Mount Olive found the scoreboard first as Ayonna Cotten hit a layup at the 9:50 mark to give the Trojans a 2-0 lead. The Trojans went on an 11-5 run as Ayonna Cotten hit three consecutive field goals, and Ivanda Hudjakova added two putting Mount Olive in the lead 13-5 with 6:04 remaining in the quarter. UMO kept the lead until Emmanuel chipped away at the UMO lead to knot the score nineteen-all. Breanna Locke broke the tie with two free-throws putting the Lions back up by one, leaving the score 20-19.

In the second quarter, Emmanuel made the first basket by Emily Dreslinski to take the lead 22-19. The remaining minutes were an up-and-back game as the teams traded possessions going on a 13-11 run with UMO trailing 42-33 going into the half.

The Lions didn't surrender up the lead in the third for the entire quarter as the Trojans only came to as close as one. Emmanuel took the five-point lead 48-43 to end the quarter.

In the final quarter, the Trojans made four unanswered baskets taking the lead 50-48 at the 8:24 mark. Trojans were finally able to break away at the 1:21 mark as Ayonna Cotten made a good free-throw off of Mari Jonassen's foul. A flagrant foul by Emmanuel, gave Ivanda Hudjakova two free-throws to put the Trojans up by three-points leading 62-59. The foul as gave the Trojans the ball back and caused the Lions to foul again in just .2, giving UMO an extra two-free throws that gave UMO the advantage to take home the 63-59. victory. 

MOUNT OLIVE LEADERS
Ayanna Cotten led the Trojans with 18 points. Ivanda HudjakovaAzariah Fields, and Kiara Jackson also had a double-digit scoring night with 13, 12, and 11 points respectively. 

EMMANUEL LEADERS
Breanna Locke led the Lions with 20 points. Mari Jonassen and Jazmin Allen also had a double-digit scoring night with 13 and 10 points respectively.

KEY MOMENT
The game's key moment was in the fourth quarter when the lions kept fouling and gave the Trojans the advantage to take home the 63-59 victory.

UP NEXT
Mount Olive will travel to Wilson N.C., where they will face the No. 2 seeded Bulldogs of Barton College on Thursday afternoon. The Trojans and Bulldogs tip-off at 7:00 in the semifinal game of the 2021 Conference Carolinas Women's Basketball Championship Tournament.
