MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Mount Olive Trojans began their 2021 season on Saturday with a doubleheader against the Francis Marion Patriots. Winning the first game, losing the second.
GAME ONE INFORMATION
First pitch was at 1pm, out of the hand of Senior
Mallory Ratcliff. The Trojans struck first in the bottom of the third inning off a single up the middle by
Madison Morgan, scoring
Emma Mooney. It remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Trojans piled on three more runs.
Ashley Mick grounded out to shortstop, scoring
Emma Mooney. The biggest hit of the game came courtesy of Freshman
Kylie Emanuele sending one up the middle scoring two more runs to give the Trojans a 4-0 lead. Francis Marion would attempt to mount a comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs on three hits but fell short in game one, 4-3.
TROJAN LEADERS
Madison Morgan led the way for the Trojans collecting three hits and driving home a run. Pitcher
Mallory Ratcliff didn't allow a hit until the 4th inning in the first game of the season and got her first win of the year with four strikeouts.
FRANCIS MARION LEADERS
Rachel Davis got two hits and two RBIs in game one to help generate the Patriots offense.
KEY MOMENT
The biggest moment of the game came courtesy of a single up the middle off the bat of
Kylie Emanuele, scoring two to give the Trojans a 4-0 lead through five innings.
GAME TWO INFORMATION
Game two was a pitchers duel through four innings between Rachel Davis of Francis Marion and
Hannah Killough of Mount Olive. Freshman pitcher Killough had the bases loaded and was the first to blink, walking in a run and allowing another via a sac fly. The Freshman kept her composure though, and limited the damage to two runs. Rachel Davis stifled the Trojans offense and went on to win game two, 2-0.
TROJAN LEADERS
Pitcher
Hannah Killough led the way in the loss only allowing two runs while striking out 9 on the day.
FRANCIS MARION LEADERS
First baseman Addie May collected a hit and an RBI to help the Patriots seal their first win of the season.
KEY MOMENT
Lauren Smallwood earned a walk with the bases loaded in the fifth inning to score home right fielder Hannah Schmidt to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead, and they went on to win the game, 2-0.
ON DECK
The Trojans are in action again on Tuesday, February 9th in a doubleheader against Catawba College at home. First pitch is scheduled for 2pm.
