Mount Olive Trojans Defeat Chowan Hawks 5-0 In Conference Opener

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The University of Mount Olive women's tennis team defeated the Hawks of Chowan University, who are the reigning Conference Carolinas Women's Tennis Champions, 5-0 in the conference opener at the John Neal Walker Tennis Courts in Mount Olive, N.C.

INSIDE THE RESULTS

  • The Trojans found themselves leading 1-0 after sweeping the Hawks in the doubles matches.
  • Lina Maria Alarcon and Arianna Orozco downed their opponents in the No. 1 doubles match 6-1, while Deike Schipper and Carmen Espinos won the No. 2 doubles 6-3 to clinch the doubles point for UMO.
  • The No. 3 doubles team of Ece Yuksel and Maria Impalea won by forfeit as CU didn't have players to fill the duo.
  • As the teams moved on to the singles matches, the weather started to cool down to a chilly 40 and below.
  • Mount Olive won three singles matches on the court and took a fourth by forfeit to win the overall match 5-0.
  • Deike Schipper in the No. 4 singles slot won in a quick 6-1, 6-2 decision.
  • She was followed by Lina Maria Alarcon at No. 2 who won her match 7-5, 6-0 and Ece Yuksel won the No. 1 singles match against a tough Cynthia Carrier 7-5, 6-3.

  • New rules were implemented this season that changed the point value of the doubles points. Now the first team with two doubles wins gets one match point.

UP NEXT

Mount Olive is back in action for a three-match road trip to Catawba, Lenior-Rhyne, and N.C. Wesleyan. The Trojans take on the Indians of Catawba on Friday at 2 p.m. in Salisbury, N.C., followed with a match against the Bears of LRU in Hickory, N.C., on Saturday at 11 a.m. UMO will go up to Rocky Mount, N.C., on Tuesday, Feb. 26, for a 2 p.m. match against the Battling Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan to wrap up the road trip.
