Women's Soccer Runs Unbeaten Streak To Five With 3-0 Win Over Southern Wesleyan

Alex Wetherholt scored a goal and assisted on Ellie Barnes' goal in the first four minutes of the match and University of Mount Olive went on to defeat Southern Wesleyan University 3-0 in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Sunday at Amon Field. The win extends the Trojans' unbeaten streak to five.

Mount Olive (6-3-2 overall, 5-1-2 Conference Carolinas) needed just over 90 seconds to get on the scoreboard as Wetherholt captured a loose ball and shot from the right side of the box into the left corner to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Wetherholt played a ball into the box to Barnes, who shot from six yards out and slipped the ball past the keeper inside the right post at the 3:53 mark.

The Trojans outshot the Warriors 7-3 in the first half and Stephanie McCoy recorded a pair of saves as Mount Olive went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

The score remained the same until 63:06 when Carly Siney Moran played a ball back to Christine Rocchio, who blasted a shot from 30 yards out.

Southern Wesleyan (1-9-0, 0-6-0) had its best scoring chance in the 83rd minute on a right-to-left shot by Brittany Woodhouse. McCoy made a diving save to preserve Mount Olive's second consecutive shutout and third of the season.

Mount Olive outshot Southern Wesleyan 11-2 in the second half and 18-5 for the match. McCoy finished with three saves, while Warrior goalkeeper Courtney McNeil had nine saves, including a save on a penalty kick in the second half.

Mount Olive is idle until Saturday when the Trojans play host to Lees-McRae College in Conference Carolinas action. Match time is 1 p.m. at Amon Field for the Trojans' regular season finale.

Saturday's is also Senior Day for Mount Olive. Ten Trojan seniors will be recognized prior to kickoff: Ellie Barnes, Kelsey Cirrito, Sydney Nelson,

Hope Perry, Nichole Poppe, Lauren Power, Madison Robak, Christine Rocchio, Madeline Russell and Jennifer Sickles.
