Trojans Suffer Three-Set Conference Loss Against King

Box Score

Megan Hight recorded a match-high five blocks, but University of Mount Olive fell to King University 25-12, 25-18, 25-19 in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Saturday at Kornegay Arena. As a team, the Trojans outblocked the Tornado 8.0-0.0.

King had first serve and the Tornado stormed out to a 7-0 lead as Casey Williams served an ace on the first point of the match. Mount Olive (3-15 overall, 2-6 Conference Carolinas) never got any closer than six points the remainder of the set.

Solo blocks by Hight and Sarah Watkins on consecutive points gave the Trojans an early lead in the second set. After King (9-11, 4-4) rallied to build a five-point lead, Mount Olive took advantage of Tornado errors to pull within 15-13. King then used Ashleigh Manke's serving to pull away as Manke served two aces and set up a pair of kills on overpasses during a 5-0 run. Manke's kill on set point gave the Tornado a two-set lead.

A kill by Britni Johnson and a block by Hight gave Mount Olive a 7-5 lead in the third set. King came back with five answered points, including back-to-back aces by Ashton Beckner, to take the lead for good.

Mount Olive stayed within striking distance for most of the set as kills by Mackenzie Call and Danielle Plante and a block by Hight and Plante pulled the Trojans within 18-16. But another ace by Williams capped a 3-0 King run and the margin never fell below four points the rest of the way.

Plante finished with a team-high six kills and no errors in 13 attempts for a .462 hitting percentage. Watkins added three blocks for the Trojans. Saturday's contest marked the first time this season Mount Olive failed to record an ace.

King was led by Manke and Lauren Willoughby with 10 kills apiece. Olivia Underwood recorded 35 assists and Amy Serowski had 17 digs. Williams served five of the Tornado's 12 aces.

Mount Olive is idle until next week when the Trojans continue their five-match homestand with a pair of Conference Carolinas contests at Kornegay Arena. The Trojans play host to Pfeiffer University Friday at 7 p.m., then entertain Belmont Abbey College Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
