The University of Mount Olive Men's Tennis team fell in the
second round of the NCAA Divison II Southeast Regional to
No. 8 Lander University 5-0 at Columbus State University Mary v.
Blackmon Tennis Center in Columbus, Ga. Saturday afternoon. Matt
Finnerty and Henric Falkenberg pushed their doubles match to 8-6,
the closest Mount Olive came to taking a doubles win in No. 1
doubles.
Mount Olive (18-2) lost their doubles matches by just two points
in No. 2 doubles and three points in No. 3 doubles. Falkenberg
was tied in the second set 1-1 in No. 3 singles before the
match was called.
Mount Olive had won 15 straight matches and was undefeated in
Division II this year before the loss to the Bearcats (16-4). The
Trojans finish the season 18-2 overall and 8-0 in Conference
Carolinas, the only Mount Olive team to ever be undefeated in the
regular and post season in conference play. The only other loss
came to Division I East Carolina University back in
February.
Conference Carolinas Tennis Coach of the Year Kevin
Coghill talked about this year's team and the season.
"I'm honestly very pleased with the season. Losing one match in
Division II is not bad for a season. I'm really pleased on how well
the guys worked this year and how well their focus was. That's the
most important thing-results can vary but I'm very pleased with
their focus and their hard work."
