University of Mount Olive salvaged a split in its two-match road trip as the Trojans defeated Lees-McRae 8-1 in Conference Carolinas women's tennis Saturday at Banner Elk, N.C. The win came less than 24 hours after a 5-4 loss against Limestone Friday at Gaffney, S.C.
Mount Olive (8-3 overall, 3-2 Conference Carolinas) took a 2-1 lead over Limestone Friday after doubles play. Francesca Ceppi and Roxanne Chouinard posted an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Alejandra Hernandez and Maite Belloso won 8-6 at No. 2 doubles.
Chouinard won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles and after Limestone (4-4, 3-0) got on the scoreboard with a win at No. 2 singles, Ceppi overcame a second-set loss for a 6-4, 0-6, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles to put the Trojans within one win of the team victory. But Limestone won the final three singles matches to rally for the dual match win.
Against Lees-McRae (1-10, 0-4), Mount Olive dropped only seven games on its way to sweeping doubles play. Samara Paldinho and Paulina Delgado combined for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. The Trojans won each of the top five singles before Lees-McRae prevented the shutout with a three-set win at No. 6 singles.
Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans play host to Randolph-Macon in a non-conference contest. Match time is 3 p.m. at Walker Tennis Center.
