Men's Soccer Falls To Southern Wesleyan 2-0 In Regular Season Finale

Box Score

Two goals early in the second half broke a scoreless tie as University of Mount Olive fell to Southern Wesleyan 2-0 in Conference Carolinas men's soccer Saturday at Central, S.C. The match was the regular season finale for both teams.

Despite the loss, Mount Olive (5-10-3 overall, 3-6-1 Conference Carolinas) had already secured a spot in the Conference Carolinas Tournament for the third straight year. The tournament gets underway Monday.

In only his fourth collegiate match – all in the last 10 days – Trojan goalkeeper Jared Miller played the first half and held Southern Wesleyan scoreless. Formerly the team manager, Miller was pressed into service after injuries to the Trojans' two goalkeepers. Miller recorded one save, while Nick Bernsdorf played the second half in goal and made six saves.

Southern Wesleyan (12-6-0) got on the scoreboard at the 49:47 mark when Alejandro Sanchez converted a penalty kick. Christian Taylor added a goal for the Warriors less than five minutes later.

The Trojans were outshot 19-10.

Mount Olive travels to Misenheimer, N.C., Monday as the seventh-seeded Trojans take on No. 2 seed Pfeiffer in a quarterfinal-round match in the 2014 Conference Carolinas Men's Soccer Tournament. The Trojans fell 2-0 at Pfeiffer during the regular season. Match time is 2 p.m.
