Box Score University of Mount Olive kept the match scoreless in the first half, but a pair of goals less than six minutes apart early in the second half made the difference as the Trojans fell to Belmont Abbey College 2-0 in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Wednesday at Belmont, N.C. The match was the Trojans' second in a row that was scoreless at halftime.
Nichole Poppe, who entered Wednesday's match leading Mount Olive (5-9-1, 3-4-1) with six goals on the season, had all four of the Trojans' first-half shots, including the initial shot of the match. Trojan goalkeeper Stephanie McCoy recorded two of her three saves in the first half to help keep the match at 0-0 through the first 45 minutes.
Belmont Abbey (8-5-2, 7-2-0) broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half as Megan Philp headed in a corner kick at the 55:24 mark. The Crusaders had nine of their 10 corner kicks in the second half. Maggie Moore added an insurance goal at 61:01.
Mount Olive managed only one more shot in the final 29 minutes, its lone shot attempt of the second half. The Trojans were outshot 13-5 by the Crusaders.
Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans play host to Limestone in a Conference Carolinas match-up. Seniors Damilia Brooks and Lauren Prott will be recognized prior to the match during Senior Day festivities. Match time is 1 p.m. at Amon Field.
