Nichole Poppe scored from 40 yards out and Stephanie McCoy made a save on a penalty kick as University of Mount Olive defeated King 2-0 in Conference Carolinas women's soccer Saturday at Amon Field. The Trojans have won five of six home matches this season.

Mount Olive (5-6-1 overall, 3-2-1 Conference Carolinas) broke a scoreless tie at the 29:36 mark after Jocelyn Yurchak's shot caromed off the King goalkeeper. Ellie Barnes put the ball into an empty goal to give the Trojans a 1-0 halftime lead.

A foul gave the Trojans a free kick at the center of the field from 40 yards out. Poppe blasted the ball just under the crossbar for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. She has recorded a goal or an assist in each of her last four matches.

King (6-5-0, 3-2-0) looked to get on the scoreboard in the 80th minute after Mount Olive was whistled for a foul. McCoy dove to her right to deflect the shot, then blocked the follow-up shot to preserve the shutout. McCoy became the third Trojan goalkeeper this season to record a shutout, joining Gigi Ramirez and Kelsey Cirrito.

Mount Olive returns to action Tuesday as the Trojans play host to UNC Pembroke in a non-conference match-up. Match time is 6 p.m. at Amon Field.
