Men's Soccer Falls To Anderson 5-1

Box Score

Hyago Matielo rallied Mount Olive from an early deficit, but Anderson stormed back with four unanswered goals to defeat the Trojans 5-1 in non-conference men's soccer Sunday at Amon Field. The match was Mount Olive's home opener.

Mount Olive (0-2-0) capitalized on a foul deep in the Anderson third to get on the scoreboard. Matielo played a free kick from just left of the box and the ball hooked in just inside the right post to even the match at 1-1 at the 29:35 mark.

The celebration was short-lived as Anderson (2-0-0) regained the lead less than a minute later. Mattias Schyberg crossed from the right side and Mark Allen punched home the goal to put Anderson back on top 2-1 at 30:25.

Anderson added to its lead at the 39:37 mark as Paul Von Hinueber scored off a deflection to make it a 3-1 game at the half. Von Hinueber also assisted on Martin Brain's goal in the 23rd minute to open the scoring.

After being limited to just the one shot on Matielo's free kick in the opening 45 minutes, Mount Olive had a pair of shot attempts in the first 90 seconds of the second half. Bright Eto got past the defense for a one-on-one, but Anderson goalkeeper Devon Ashy came off his line to challenge and was able to deflect Eto's shot. Ruben Gomez's shot 38 seconds later was just wide of the right post.

Mount Olive would not get another shot attempt the rest of the way as the Trojans were outshot 25-3. Schyberg and Aaron Roberson added goals for Anderson in the second half.

Aleksandar Drobac recorded five saves in the first half for Mount Olive, while Adam Lawrence had four saves in the second half. Ashy finished with one save for Anderson.

The meeting was the first between the two teams since Anderson left Conference Carolinas for the South Atlantic Conference after the 2009-10 academic year.

Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Charlotte, N.C., to take on former Conference Carolinas member Queens, which moved to the South Atlantic Conference. Match time is 7:30 p.m.
