Women's Soccer Battles Mars Hill To 2-2 Tie In Home Opener

Box Score

Lauren Power assisted on goals by Alex Wetherholt and Christine Rocchio 90 seconds apart early in the first half, but Mount Olive was unable to stop a second half rally as the Trojans settled for a 2-2 double-overtime tie against Mars Hill in non-conference women's soccer Saturday at Amon Field. The match was the Trojans' home opener.

Mount Olive (0-1-1) broke a scoreless tie at the 13:28 mark when Power served the ball to Wetherholt in the box. Wetherholt eluded a defender and scored from 15 yards out just inside the right post to give Mount Olive a 1-0 lead.

Trojan pressure led to a pair of corner kicks and the second proved to be the charm. Power served from the left corner and Rocchio one-touched from eight yards out at 15:58.

Power narrowly missed a third assist right before halftime after lobbing a service into the box. Mars Hill goalkeeper Tori Stajduhar captured the ball on a high bounce to keep it away from a Trojan runner as Mount Olive went into halftime on top 2-0.

Each team had two shot attempts in the first half.

Carlee Bock nearly gave the Trojans a three-goal lead less than three minutes into the second half, but her 22-yard shot caromed off the crossbar. Wetherholt also had an 18-yard shot hit off the crossbar in the 65th minute after a Mars Hill foul gave Mount Olive a free kick.

Mars Hill (0-0-1) got on the scoreboard at 57:12 when Hannah Russell's high arching shot from inside the box went off of Edenhofner's fingertips. Rachel Webber was first to the loose ball and capitalized on an empty net to pull the Lions within 2-1.

Prior to the goal, the left side linesman held up the offsides flag, but the referee waved it off. Mars Hill was flagged for offsides 11 times, compared to once for Mount Olive.

Mount Olive clung to a one-goal lead until Webber took advantage of another loose ball and an empty net in the final six minutes of regulation. The Trojans were able to poke the ball away just outside the box on a breakaway chance, but the ball went right to Webber. Edenhofner challenged, but Webber slipped the ball past to even the match at the 84:13 mark.

Power came close to adding a game-winning goal to her first collegiate two-assist performance, but her 24-yard shot with 18 seconds left in regulation went just over the crossbar as the match went into overtime.

Edenhofner recorded a pair of saves in the first overtime as neither team was able to score. Mount Olive had a pair of scoring chances in the second overtime, but the Trojans were unable to convert a corner kick and Damilia Brooks' shot was blocked in the 107th minute.

Mars Hill outshot the Trojans 13-8, including an 8-4 advantage in the second half. Edenhofner recorded five saves for Mount Olive, while Stajduhar had one save for the Lions.

Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans play host to Wingate in another contest against a South Atlantic Conference opponent. Match time is 7 p.m. at Amon Field.
